Chinese news agency Xinhua last week revealed the “world’s first AI news anchors,” which are puppet-like digital renderings of real-world news readers that can talk through any headlines they’re provided with, 24 hours a day. Computer vision and machine learning are used to look at video of Xinhua’s human anchors, the results of which are then used to create realistic facial expressions in real time. Judging by the uncanny valley-meets-Clutch Cargo-like performance of the talking mouths, which is not unlike some of the #deepfake videos proliferating online, human anchors won’t need to quit their day jobs anytime soon.
