Time Is Safety

Among the many tasks that computer vision and AI makes easier for humans is flagging and removing child sex abuse material (CSAM), then trying to find the perpetrators. Google has long been working on algorithms to combat this issue and reduce its spread, and now it’s releasing an AI toolkit to make it easier for partners such as the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) to implement the technology on their own. Computer vision helps organizations uncover images that may not be identified with known identifying text or hashtags, which can help lead to faster and more comprehensive spotting of CSAM, and time is safety in this important endeavor. As Google engineering lead Nikola Todorovic and product manager Abhi Chaudhuri put it in their blog post on the project: “ Quick identification of new images means that children who are being sexually abused today are much more likely to be identified and protected from further abuse.”
