This AR Museum App Gets It Right


Museum AR apps have been lackluster affairs so far, offering more distraction than valuable new information to the art appreciation experience, but the Hirshhorn Gallery in Washington, DC has just upped the ante by bringing the artists themselves into the museum-going experience. Hirshhorn Eye is an AR smartphone app that lets visitors to the Smithsonian’s contemporary art gallery focus their handheld cameras on a piece of art, then get the de rigueur history and background, as well as exclusive pop-up video explanations from the artists—everyone from Olafur Eliasson and Damien Hirst to Jeff Koons and Lorna Simpson—themselves. Now that's what we call ARt appreciation!
