IBM Watson’s Cognitive Computing division has been getting the lion’s share of attention for its collaborations with tennis and golf tournaments that apply computer vision and AI to match and game footage, but Microsoft is no sports events slouch. Its Azure-based computer vision service has partnered with the PGA Tour to comb through archival and real-time video to create highlight reels and libraries for use on broadcast and social media. What’s more, Narrative Science’s Quill natural-language generation (NLG) platform will auto-generate text recaps for matches and video, adding an extra element of context. Obviously this will make the sports broadcast producer’s job easier, but it will also broaden the scope of event coverage, with more up-and-coming golfers getting attention. Welcome to the PGAI Tour.
