The rigidity of school uniforms has long been the bane of some kids’ existences, but the tradition is getting heavier in China, where kids in Guizhou Province have to wear “intelligent uniforms” embedded with chips that enable teachers, parents, and school administrators to track their every movement, and then some. Alarms go off if kids leave school, play hookie, or doze off in class. And thanks to facial recognition that’s paired with the chips, the uniforms can’t be swapped, but that same technology allows for in-school purchases at least. Not surprisingly, the uniforms have led to a rise in student attendance, according to school officials.
