In an attempt to minimize the time children spend playing video games—and the ensuing addiction and myopia that can ensue—Chinese tech giant Tencent is implementing a facial recognition system that can detect if someone is a minor when they sign onto a game. Last week, it kicked off a trial with 1,000 players of its mobile blockbuster Honor of Kings in Beijing and Shenzhen. The multiplayer game is the most popular in China and has more than 200 million players, but so far there’s no word when and if the trial will expand to other titles or gamers. One thing’s for sure, though: At some point in the future, it will become impossible to lie about your age.
