Missing your dog or cat? The same facial recognition technology that’s being used to identify human perps and lost travelers is now being applied to pets. In California’s Contra Costa County just outside of San Francisco, the local animal services office has launched Finding Rover, an app that lets you register your pets and upload pictures of them. Then, if they go missing, the system matches up the portraits with images of pets at local shelters. It’s a nice complement to existing tracking tech like GPS-location collars, and probably something most owners would welcome in terms of eventually accessing dog and cat mugs via public access cameras. Given how dogs and cats are among the most image-recognized animals, it’s surprising that this capability hasn’t been used yet for more specific and practical purposes such as this.
