As with its default ringtones, Apple has been frustratingly slow with introducing new Animojis, the computer vision-powered AR facial avatars that launched on the iPhone X last year, but a slew of fun new features in this area were announced as part of the new iOS 12 at the company’s annual WWDC developer conference this week. Besides four new characters a T-rex, a tiger, a koala bear and a ghost all animojis now have tongue recognition, which means that body part can be incorporated into the AR-based face masks in flirty or non-flirty ways (thanks to the addition of wink recognition, too). What’s more, Apple is introducing Memojis, which allow users to customize hairstyles, skin tone, eye color, eyewear, and so on à la Bitmoji. On the broader AI front, Apple also announced Core ML 2, an updated version of its machine learning models that is 30 percent faster.
