Augmented reality ads are inevitable, and promise to provide boatloads of new promo surfaces and objects that were impossible to use in the past, but would you want ads on your house? It brings up an interesting issue around property in virtual spaces and GPS coordinates. Arguments exist for and against the practice. Mirroring some of the discussions around consumer data and social media, many questions arise: For example, will consumers need to be paid for use of their augmented world surfaces, or will virtual ads get slipped into user agreements? It’ll depend on how seriously people take augmented reality in the future, but if some of the precedents set by Pokémon Go are any indication, it’ll likely lean towards the former.
