Worried about algorithms running amuck? Take comfort in this profile of computer scientist Donald Knuth, who, at 80, remains committed to rigorously-written, solid algorithms that can be understood by machines and humans and ideally also written by humans. His four-volume book, The Art of Computer Programming, is considered seminal, even though it’s still a work in progress (the first volume came out in 1968, with a new installment due in April 2019). Knuth says it will take another 25 years to truly complete. Because sometimes it’s better to move slow and not break things.
